Erwin Wurm
Since the mid 1980s, Erwin Wurm has been using tactics of surprise to question the practice of sculpture, in work which may take the form of everyday objects (a garment, a bucket, a ball, cutlery etc...) or drawing, video or photography. llk is the second version of a sculpture that combines an object with its own depiction : two cardboard boxes are positioned so that a video showing these two same boxes filmed in the exhibition venue may be projected inside them. Walking round the work, the spectator mimics the movement of the camera. Bending down, he or she sees in picture form what he or she has previously experienced. The work is thus a context in which to become aware of the relation of the body and the gaze in a time and space that are placed inside on another, indicating the implacable distance between all our depictions of reality.
